One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, part 2

Now that you have observed all these characters (McMurphy, Chief, Harding, Bibbitt, Martini, Cheswick, and Taber) a little, tell me if you think they have a mental illness. I know we are not ready to label them something specific, but we can describe their behavior and decide if they need psychiatric treatment. So go ahead and describe their problems, if any.

After watching half of the movie I have some insight on some of the main characters. I do not think that McMurphy has a mental illness. I think that he is just full of self-determination and wants freedom and that is why he acts the way he does. I believe that McMurphy is fine. I also feel as though Chief does not suffer from mental illness, symptoms he has in the movie include, being deaf, and dumb. However, I think that he is just paranoid and bullied and he keeps to himself. I think that now that McMurphy is around he will have a companion and might help him with treatment. The next character I have thought about is Harding, I think that Harding has a tough time with his sexuality, he seems to be having some problems, other than that I believe he is intelligent. If he had one on one time to discuss his problems I think he would be more likely to discuss his feelings, and be able to leave the ward. Billy Bibbit, is a younger patient, and appears to be very timid and fearful of many things. He also has a stuttering problem. If he were to get more confidence I think that he would be able to function like a normal human being. Martini is one patient who I believe really does suffer from a mental illness; he always seems to be hallucinating and delusional. I am not sure if any treatment could help him. I feel as though Cheswick also may also have a mental illness. He is always eager to talk but he appears to be clueless at times. Lastly, Taber is a patient who always appears to be angry. I think that he needs anger management and he would be fine. In the end, I think that with McMurphy in the ward, he will help each one of these patients in a different way, and everyone of them will eventually be able to function like normal human beings. They all need to overcome, their fears, and problems.

  2. After watching this much of the movie, I have realized that I think most of the characters in the mental ward are not truly psychologically ill, and in some ways I believe that them being at the mental institue makes matters worse for them. Mcmurphy definitely does not have anything wrong with him, and if anything he is helping the rest of them to take part in normal activities. Chief is deaf so he cannot really help to not seem normal, but I think that if he could hear it would be a lot different and he does well for not being about to talk and hear. Bibbitt has issues with girls and that took a toll on his life, but I think therapy could help him. Martini and Cheswick seem to be the most mentally ill out of all the patients because they get really nervous and change their emotions drastically at times, although when they receive group therapy they also get worked up so it may not be helping them. Taber gets really mad so maybe he could receive some therapy to make him not so angry. They all have very different personalities, but I believe that they could be assisted in different ways the Nurse Kratched is using in the movie, because she is too harsh on them. They need to take part in more fun activities that make them happy and excited like the fishing trip McMurphy took them on.

  3. Mc Murphy doesn’t have a mental illness I don’t believe. He does have some problems with anger management because he tends to slam things down when he gets angry, but other than that he seems to be mentally normal. Bibbit does seem to have a problem with shuddering. He seems to of been put down his whole life by an authority figure and doesn’t seem to be very confident. Chief I am not so sure what to think about him yet. I believe that he has a mental illness but so far he just seems to be quiet. He learned how to play basketball quite quickly when someone spent a little bit of time on him. I think with the proper care he could be close to doing a lot on his own. Harding seems to get really defensive really easily but I don’t feel like he has that big of a problem. He seems like he needs a bit of attention or help but other than that he seems just not to have that much confidence. Cheswick gets over whelmed and tends to make funny faces, and he also sticks up for people like Harding when they are picked on. I believe he is really mentally ill. Martini is also mentally ill. He can’t really understand the games but he still loves to play them. He also ate a monopoly piece during one game. Taber has some anger management problem and is on the edge of being mentally ill or not. He seems to just yell negative things at anyone especially Harding but I don’t know if he can control it or not. In the end I think Mc Murphy being there will give them a confidence they were never encouraged to have and help them see themselves in ways other than the useless or small.

After watching more of the movie, I have begun to make inferences about some of the characters and whether or not they actually have mental illnesses or not. I believe that the only two men with mental illnesses are Martini and Cheswick. They both seem to have learning delays and social problems. I don't believe that McMurphy is crazy at all. He is rebellious and doesn't like to follow the rules, which is what brought him to the 'nut house' in the first place. Billy Bibbitt's only issue is that he studders which makes him self-concious and therefore socially awkward. He isn't insane, or mentall ill or psychologially unsound. What's sad about Billy is that he's such a young man contained in an institution. I also don't believe that Taber or Harding is mentally ill. Harding is voluntarily in the institution, and after hearing about his issues with his wife, I think that he probably believes himself to be mentally ill becasue of his wife's feelings towards him. Taber is forced to be in the hospital so I have a feeling that he's not so much crazy but more of a normal criminal. Chief is hard to describe because I've alreay read the book so I know what's up with him. So far in the movie however, most people would believe that he was deaf and dumb and that he belongs in the institution. I know better...

  5. Martini, whose mental development seems stunted, acts like a small child. The State must care for him and entertain him as best it can - no treatment can reverse such behavior.

McMurphy is a rebel - zany without being completely unhinged.

The movie is widely considered an anti-establishment parable, poking fun at the Man and his arbitrary definitions of deviance (that Foucault stuff). In a laughably subjective exercise, the doctors debate whether McMurphy is "crazy" or not without attempting to use more sophisticated terminology. Nurse Kratched and her rules are schoolmarmish, desiring obedience for the sake of obedience.

The patients submit to this absurd control, exhibiting a depressing false consciousness - most of them were not forcibly committed.

By this point i think i have a good idea of every character by now. McMurphy, i know is not crazy. He acts as a rebel when it comes to the nurses. An example is he doesnt take his medicine, and he tries to change the schedual. On the other hand he is really nice to the other patients. He has fun with them and jokes around, and he tries to be friends with Chief. The biggest thing he has done so far was when he stole the bus and he went fishing with his friends. This shows that he is rebelious to "society" and wants to show everyone who they are and that they dont belong in the crazy house. Chief is presented as deaf and dumb. Though it seems difficult for him to understand McMurphy, he does what McMurphy wants him to do. He becomes good friends with McMurphy and helps him to escape. But i do not think he is crazy either, he is just unable to hear. Harding is presented as an intelligent person. He often uses big words, but is easily annoyed by the other patients. I dont think Harding is crazy either, he just is having some trouble at home. Billy has a huge studdering problem. He cannot get through a sentence without studdering atleast four times on one word. We learn that he tried to commit suicide, and that he likes Candy. Other then that he doesnt have any problems, so he too is not crazy. Cheswick is one of my favorites. He sounds and acts like a child. Cheswick always agrees with any of the other patients and does whatever they tell him to. And out of no where, he starts to yell at nurse ratched and asks why she gets to have his cigarrets. He too is not crazy, he is just a little strange. Like that guy who just dances the whole movie, or the people who just do one movement over and over, those people are crazy. Cheswick is just weird, but not crazy. Martini is not very smart, and doesnt learn, like when McMurphy was trying to explain the rules when they were playing cards. He acts childish because he puts toys in his mouth. If anyone is crazy out of all of them it is him. Taber likes to swear a lot and yell a lot. He also makes bets with McMurphy all the time. But i'm not really sure what he is doing there. He's not crazy and so far it seems like he doesnt have a problem yet.

  7. --McMurphy doesn't have a mental illness. He may have a hyperactive disorder and feel the need to rebel, but there is really nothing seriously wrong with him.
--The Chief pretends that he is deaf and dumb and only reveals the truth to McMurphy. I think he probably just doesn't want to have to deal with everyone on the ward and prefers to be left alone.
--Harding talks a lot and can get a little argumentative. There doesn't seem to be anything severely wrong with him, I think he is just a little off because of what he went through with his wife.
--I feel bad for Billy Bibbitt. He has a very bad stuttering problem and he seems like he really just wants a woman to care about him that he can share his life with. He has trouble understanding relationships and I think it's sad that he tried to commit suicide over a girl.
--Martini and Cheswick seem like their minds never fully developed and they act sort of childish. Cheswick is whiny and tries to make friends with everyone.
--Taber likes to cause problems with everyone and he has outbursts of swearing. It seems as though he has an anger management problem.

  8. After seeing all of the characters, I feel that there are some who do have problems, but there are also some who do not. McMurphy might act a little crazy, but it is nothing serious. He would be able to live a normal life, and have no problem. Also I feel that Chief really doesn't have any problems either. Now that I have learned he is neither deaf or dumb, he really just seems to be shy. This is a problem that can easily be overcome with simple therapy, and there is no need for him to be in this mental institution.
On the other hand I feel some of the people do have somewhat of a mental illness. For example I think that Billy, because of his stuttering, has low self esteem and maybe even depression. This is something common today and is still not a serious issue. Most of the people really don't seem to have any serious conditions and they all seem to be held back by Nurse Ratched from ever realizing their true potentials.

  9. These patients appear to be mentally sound, with the exception of Martini and Cheswick. Many of them are there voluntarily, so they may feel that they need mental help to some degree, but they are certainly not "crazy." Martini seems developmentally challenged, and Cheswick appears to have some sort of mental illness as well. McMurphy may be rebellious and wild, but he is not crazy. Chief chooses to be mute, and Harding has a wife and life outside the hospital. The patients may benefit from some psychiatric treatment, but most of them could probably function successfully on their own.

McMuphy- i don't think McMurphy has a mental illness i think he just enjoys the attention of others and likes to get himself in situations where he needs to escape and be the hero.
Chief- i dont think Chief has a serious mental illness either. He just enjoys keeping to himself and not having to deal with other people.
Harding-I also don't think Harding has a mental illness i just think he uses the institution as an escape from his home life.
Billy- the only problems i noticed with Billy were his stuttering and low self esteem which many people have, but i wouldnt catergorize it as a mental illness.
Martini and Cheswick- These two seem to be the most mentally ill out of all of them. They both act like young children and always need to be entertained somehow.
Taber-The only issue i see with Taber is his anger and i think as long as he went for anger management he would be fine.

  11. I think that the only people who seem to have any sort of mental illness of the group is Martini and Cheswick. Martini is like a young child in that he is easily distracted and he doesn't stay too focused for long. When they were playing cards, Martini was getting on everyone else's nerves by not knowing what he was doing. Cheswick is also like a little child in that he tends to complain alot like a child would. McMurphy I think is just using the place as an excuse, Chief just keeps to himself, Harding just has personal problems, Billy has a stuttering problem, and Taber has a bit of an anger problem.

  12. Billy Bibbit-- Although we don't want to use the medical terms for the patients conditions, it is clear that he suffers from clinical depression. He worries about his mother and what she thinks of him and he sutters because he is intensely insecure and nervous. He is put down by society and is made to feel lousy.
McMurphey-- Clearly has no real clinical condition. It is obvious that he is at least more intellectual than the other inmates. Although he seems kind of wacky sometimes, that's only because of his sporadic and tempered attitude.
Chief-- Not deaf or dumb like they all believe. He only speaks to McMurphey because he respects him. He's a very big man with amazing strengh. He doesn't seem to have any mental illnesses although it looked like he perhaps has a learning disorder maybe.
Martini-- Acts extremely childish. He's a child stuck in a man's body. "I want my cigarettes" is a characteristic scene for him.
Dale Harding--Another character who seems too intellectual to be around the ward. Yet he is still controlled by the leading force, Ratched.

McMurphy- I really think, that he has quite a short fuse, so a little anger management class wouldn't hurt. Maybe a little narcism and sociopath, but he is a very impulsive person and doesn't think of others and consequences. He seems very cocky as well, but I think it is mostly his personality than a mental illness.
Billy Bibbitt- Scuicidal, dpression, mother to son relationship issues which could've caused his inability to socialize with girls.
Chief-I really don't think anything is wrong with him
Martini- I think that something in his past life must of scarred him and he is unable to move past that. Maybe that's why he's always acting and speaking like a child
Harding- I think he's not menatlly ill, but i think that he has is issues with his wife that could be resolved thru marrige counseling
Taber-He could use a little anger management toohed
Cheswick-I would say that he is sort of like Martini, a little childish, seems slow. As if his develpment stages has never been fully reached

  14. McMurphy - While I do not believe he is mentally ill, it must be noted that he is in prison for statutory rape. This as we discussed in class is a bit disturbing considering McMurphy's age. It's not as though he was 17 which while illegal, makes it a bit more reasonable. Therefore, I believe him to be a little unstable, but not able to plead insanity by any means.
Cheswick - This poor guy is always looking to be everyone's friend and tag along everywhere. While I believe he has a mental illness due to his childlike qualities and simplistic reactions to certain stimuli I believe that Cheswick could be a functioning member of society if placed in some type of care more personalized than the ward.
Martini - Martini grows easily agitated and also has childlike reactions in many situations. I take this as an indicator that he actually has a mental illness. You can distinguish between his & McMurphy's appearingly insane actions because McMurphy always has a calculated reason behind his. Martini just can't help himself.
Chief - He does not have a mental illness he is simply deaf and dumb. This makes it difficult for him to function in society.
Harding - While Harding has a lot of outbursts and seems uncomfortable with his sexuality (to the point where he commits himself), I do not believe him mentally ill. If he were to receive some more positive one on one treatment I believe he could overcome his personal difficulties.
Billy - Much like Harding, I believe Billy could benefit from some personalized one on one treatment. He has poor self confidence due to his stuttering problem and the apparent fact that he just never seems to be good enough for his mother to accept him. He is young and he has plenty of time to work out his issues but the ward is not the place.
Taber - He constantly bursts out in anger at the other patients - I do not believe him mentally ill but he could benefit from some personal therapy or anger management classes. He would be a prime candidate to exhibit road rage.
Nurse - She has control issues. Her manner of therapy is not at all helpful to the patients. She belittles them and worsens many of their already squashed self-confidences. She is not mentally ill but this may not be the best line of work for her.

  15. I think all of the cahracter experience atleast some form of mental illness. Other than Mcmurphy, they all willing submitted themselves into the institution. This fact alone shows that they themselves do not believe or do not choose to function in normal society, leading me to believe they have all had instances that would clearly demonstrate that they have mental illnessess, these instances are just not discussed in the movie. Mcmurphy, the only one who is forced to stay in the instition, also has multiple problems. He is erratic, and often does things without much thought behind them. He has anger issues and is easily provoked and very confrontational. He is certainly a deviant in our society, but I dont know if this warrants the label of having a mental illness.

  16. i think that only Bibbitt, Martini, Cheswick, and Taber have the mental illness. mccmurphy, and cheif and also harding can fix their problems. mccmurphy is just crazy, cheif is quiet, and harding is very smart and i cant really seem what is wrong with him.

McMurphy- in no way is McMurphy insane a little of the rocker yes, but insane? Not in the slightest he is in complete control of his thought know what he is doing and exactly why he is doing it.
Chief- Not insane, he is simply confused or misguided he knows right and wrong he just reacted in the wrong way to the situation with his father
Cheswick- In my personal opinion he is not insane his mind just never left its childhood state. To my best guess i would say that he may have been abused or simply ignored as a child and never had a model of what he should grow up into, but if it were that he had been abused it may have been that in being abused he thought he was doing something wrong which was why he was being abused or punished, thats why he is always trying to be on people goodside and that is why he is so apologetic and overly apathetic. Bibbitt- hard to label, he dances on the line of insanity and sanity because of his suicide attempts but he knows he is the way he is because (in reference to Freud) he wants his mothers love badly.
Harding- not insane just refuses any advice thrown at him.
Taber- Not insane he just acts on impulses he is very antagonistic especially when he sees that what he does bothers someone for example, provoking Harding

    ReplyDelete
  18. McMuphy- Not mentally ill in my opinion. He simply enjoys being a badd-ass and getting away with doing crazy things, he enjoys living his life to the fullest and not following the rules of authority. Very independent, but not mentally ill.
Chief- Pretending to be deaf and dumb is not a mental illness. The fact that he opened up to McMurphy proves that he isn't all that crazy. Chief likes to be by himself. The only thing called for dicussion is that he can kill his father and McMurphy so effortlessly, even though its to put them out of their misery. It takes something real strong inside a person to be able to do that.
Harding-Harding ran away from his wife and his life. No mantal illness, he just cant handle things.
Billy- He stutters and has low self esteem, probably becuase he stutters. Once he got with the girl at the ward party, he stopped stuttering and had confidence.Nurse Ratchet brought him down to his old level immediately, which is why he killedthey act like they are in elementary school and always need to be entertained. I think martinis mental gorwth is stunted, and he always needs to be playing. i say these two are mentally ill.
Taber- anger management. No psych ward.

After watching up until this part od the movie i have ben able to see some problems that these men maybe facing. First i think that harding just cant handle things and that he just needs counseling to work out the problems he is having. Taber is a very angry man who just needs conuseling to help his anger issues. Billy bibet has a stuttering and low self esteem problem and he doesnt have much confidence. After the girl came to the ward he felt alot better about himself and he even stopped most of his stuttering, but of course nurse ratchet had to come in and make him feel worse about himself again and it drove him to suicide. my analisis is that in the end he really was mentally ill and that if he would have gotten help the right way he would have ben better off. Martini is a boy stuck in a adult mens body. He always has to be playing and its like hes stuck in his little kid years. I think that martini is mentally ill and something happened that made him stop growing mentally. Cheswick is also another patient who is stuck in his younger years and never grew out of it. He may have ben abused or neglected when he was younger because he always feels like he needs to be on peoples good side and he is a very emotional person who doesnt have much confidence and he doesnt feel like anyone appreciates him. I think cheswick isnt mentally ill but i think that he has alot of problems from something that happened when he was little and he needs some help. The Chief in my opinion was not at all mentally ill. Just because he pretended to be deaf and dumb does not mean he is mentally ill. Just because society is a very social environment doesnt mean that he is mentally ill cause he doesnt want to talk. He finally opened up to mccmurphy and this shows that he is not insane. Even know he did kill mccmurphy and his father he did it to put them out of their misery because he knew they were being used as lab rats. so in my opinion he isnt mentally ill at all, just has some problems just like everyone else. Mccmurphy to me is not mentally ill he knows right from wrong he just chooses to do what he pleases. He enjoys being the bad kid and doing daring things and being crazy and he doesnt care what anyone thinks of him and he is very indepenedent. The fact that he helped Chief open up shows that hes not so bad after all and i dont think that he is mentally ill.

  20. Martini and Cheswick are the two that have legitimate mental illnesses. They seem to have some problems that severely limit their ability to function. They also seem to be a little slower than the others, almost like they are still partially in the childhood stages. Everyone else has small problems but they are not severely mentally ill. Billy has some mommy issues and his problems have just been exasperated by Nurse Ratched. Chief just doesn’t want to deal with people. He stays quiet and just does his own thing avoiding the people. McMurphy is just a rebellious character. He doesn’t have a mental illness he is just the typical rebel.
