  1. I found the end of the movie very sad, but I liked it. Billy Bibbitt's suicide showed just how cruel Nurse Ratched could really be. He didn't even do anything that bad, and there was no reason for her to threaten him with telling his mother about the incident. I'm glad the Chief suffocated McMurphy at the very end because although it must have been a hard thing for him to do, it was better than having him lay there like a vegetable and letting Nurse Ratched get satisfaction from seeing him like that. His life was worthless because the lobotomy took away everything that made him McMurphy.

I think that the end of the movie was good. I'm kind of upset that Chief ended up having the kill McMurphy, but I don't blame him for doing so. I have to say I would have never expected him to smother him right then and there. I know he got lobotomized and all but wouldn't he recover eventually? If not then, again its a good thing that he killed him. And then, Mr. Yip, when you explained the significance of what had just happened, it made the ending much clearer because it was hard to hear what he was saying for me so I missed what Chief was saying. Over all I would leave the ending the same.

  3. I was extremely surprised but not neccessarily dissapointed with the end of the movie, because I was not expection McMurphy to die at all. I was sad that McMurphy had to die, but at the same time I was just as relieved as Chief when he put him out of his misery. I would have liked to see Nurse Ratched and McMurphy make friends and some of the patients in the mental facility be released, but none of that happened in the end of the movie. I didn't like that Nurse Ratched was satisfied with what happened to McMurphy and I feel like she should have been punished more for the attitude that she had with the patients at the mental hospital. She should have had to experience what they did and been tortured a bit more.

I was very shocked at the end of the movie. However, I did like the ending. I think it was sad to see Billy Bibbit commit suicide because I think he was just starting to feel good about himself, but Nurse Ratched had to ruin it for him. Also, I can’t believe that McMurphy got a lobotomy. I can imagine it being very difficult for Chief to smother his friend, but in reality it was probably the right thing to do. No one wanted to see McMurphy suffer, and no one wanted to see Nurse Ratched with her smug face looking at McMurphy with satisfaction. I was happy to see that Chief escaped, although I think some of the others should have followed him and left Nurse Ratched by herself. I think a better ending would have been if Nurse Ratched had to live the rest of her life in misery because that is what she did to these men. I wish she would have gotten pay back.

Honestly, I had to say this was a great movie. I was surprised because I really thought i was going to hate it. But it actually turned out that I liked it and it had a really good plot, storyline, message, and was well acted out. It was perfect. The ending was really sad though, how Chief had to suffocate McMurphy to put him out of his misery. I mean, yes, it is depressing but i wouldn't change it at all. This is so because it is really touching in a way, knowing that Chief was going to take McMurphy with him. But by that he didn't mean it physically but spiritually.

  6. However sad the end of the movie was, I still liked it. I thought it ended perfectly. Sure it was really sad how Nurse Ratched finally pushed Billy over the edge and he committed suicide, but it helped show how cruel she can be when things don't go her way. I thought that it was the right thing to do when Chief killed McMurphy because Chief realized that McMurphy wasn't himself anymore and that he would be better off dead. I think he felt that he couldn't let McMurphy suffer in the state that he was because he liked the real McMurphy better.

I really enjoyed the ending of the movie. I liked that Chief killed McMurphy and that he over came everyone's doubts and crashed that sink thing through the window. I don't find it to be particularly morbid that Chief killed McMurphy becasue he was no longer himself. There was nothing left of what made him McMurphy. It is however a little bit disturbing that the movie suggests that Chief also killed his father becasue he had wasted away. I liked how Chief escapes at the end, but if I could change one thing I probably wouldn't have had the closing scene be Chief running across that hill. It was a little bit cliche. Overall, I really appreciated the movie and comparing it to the book, it was pretty true to the original story.

  8. When I first saw the ending, to be honest I was pretty dissapointed. The whole movie I was hoping for a happy ending. After reading some of the other students responses, and after we discussed it in class I do realize how the ending had a lot of meaning to it. Although it was a very sad ending, especially when Chief has to kill Mcmurphy, it really sent a good message to the audience. This movie gave a really good idea to us how people were and possibly still are treated in mental institutions. I really did enjoy this movie overall and I don't feel anything should be changed.

  9. I was really bothered by the ending. The fact that Billy commits suicide bothered me more than the Chief suffocating McMurphy. Billy had the chance to be healthy and happy if Nurse Ratchett hadn't been so incredibly mean to him. She acted like a bully belittling him for her own enjoyment which is sick and sadistic. If he had received therapy elsewhere I have no doubt that he could have worked through his issues. Billy's death is on the Nurse's hands. While I was surprised to see McMurphy get a lobotomy, the fact that the Chief killed him was not so shocking to me. There was nothing left of the old McMurphy, the Chief was just doing what he felt should be done. Not that it excuses murder but let's face it, it makes for a good movie and there were crazy things happening in that ward. It was amusing to see the Chief put the sink through the window though. That part I enjoyed.

Last year in English I read that book and was very excited to watch the movie in class. The movie I felt was almost as good as the book but I also get more interested in something when I can physically see it. The characters did a really good job playing there parts. The movie was kind of an inspiration. The life that McMurphy brought back into the ward was awesome to see. He gave the characters the sense that they could be people who took care of themselves and didn’t have to just do what nurse Ratchet said. She made them feel like less and kept them down but McMurphy brought them back to life in a sense. The end of the movie is really hard to watch with the suicide and the death of McMurphy. He is the type of character you want to see come out on top. The only positive thing that came from that is his legend will live on and no one will remember him as a vegetable but as the crazy energetic person that he was. Over all I think it was a fantastic movie. I would definitely see again and show it to others too.

  11. The only way I would change the ending is to have McMurphy excape with the cheif. That would make the movie perfect. It would also be fun if everyone left with them and the ward was empty in the morning.

  12. This is definitely one of the best movies I have ever seen and I look forward to watching it again sometime. Many of the things are sad at the end of themovie, Billy committing suicice and McMurphy getting lobotomized; but these are necessary for making the movie great and telling the story. Had everything ended happily the movie wouldnt be as powerful as it is. The death of Billy and the Cheif's killing of McMurphy really solidify there characters and let the viewer in on the whole picture, it gives them more depth, it makes it more complex. Billy's suicide shows that he really was not as easy going and loveable as he seemed; he was a deeply troubled man with severe problems he felt could not be fixed. Simillarly, the Chief emerges as a seemingly perfectly fine indicidual, but the fact that he killed his father and then is capable of killing McMurphy in the end shows he may not be as sane as you were lead to believe.

  13. i like the whole movie, the end was the best because it left me wanting more. i wanted to see what else could happen but i know that there would be no movie without mccmurphy. i think its dumb that they did that to him, because he really did not have any problem. and its sad about billy, because i think nurse ratched made him do that, i dont like her at all. but the whole movie was good. id watch it again

I think that the ending was amazing because of the way that it portrayed McMurphy for exactly what he was... a tragic hero. At the start of the movie he is belligerent and impulsive whereas the other patients are under Nurses control. as the movie progresses McMurphy realizes he has something to lose and becomes less impulsive whereas the other patients learn to be more free spirited. in the end he was finally "broken" but in the process of doing so he "freed" Chief

  15. I liked the end of the movie, because Chief finally found it inside himself to run away. The sink had been sitting there the entire time, but he finally took the initiative to escape. I felt bad that he had to kill McMurphy, but in reality, what made him McMurphy was killed during the lobotomy. Chief simply didn't want his friend to be a dead vegetable, left to rot and be observed by nurse Ratchet. It was sad that Billy killed himself, but it goes to show how cruel Nurse Ratchet was and howe much of an effect she had on the patients. Billy was punished for somethint that is common behavior outside of the psych ward, and he killed himself over it. Although the ending was sad, i enjoyed it.

  16. The ending of the movies was great. It was very meaningful and wrapped up the movie in a very clear way. Billy committing suicide showed just how bad he thought his life was and the degree to which he was suffering inside. McMurphy getting smothered at the end was the perfect ending. He came in and freed the patients. He allowed Chief to be free but he ended up trapped. Chief then repaid him by not letting him suffer the drab existence of living through the lobotomy. I think that any other ending would not have been as meaningful and this one was perfect.

Although the ending was very tragic with Billy commiting suicide and Mcmurphy getting killed by Chief i thought it was very good movie. Mcmurphy was the one who came and helped everyone and chief and helped them get freed but in the end mcmurphy ended up trapping himself and chief helped him by not letting him suffer. I think that Nurse ratchett made this all happen and made billy commite suicide and didnt help chief or mcmurphy and mcmurphy was just some kind of lab rat. I think chief not letting him suffer and living through the labotomy was a good idea but in the end when chief actually finally escaped i think that mcmurphy should have went with him. I know that he did it for mcmurphy because he was just going to be ruined and degraded by nurse ratchett but if mcmurphy left with chief it would have ben a perfect ending.
