While the text reading (p. 2-16) on the early schools are limited in this chapter, there is enough to give you a general idea of what their main approach is to human behavior. Tell me which one makes the most sense to you and would likely be the most "modern."

ReplyDeleteOut of the different schools of Psychology I found that the views of the Humanistic Psychology were personally the ones that made the most sense and seemed to be “modern”. I Believe in the ideas that and individual can have psychological growth and self-direction. I think this means something like trial and error. If something doesn’t work we learn from it and do it a different way. I also believe in the importance of self-determination, free will, and human potential. Without those factors how would anyone do anything? You need to be determined and have the freedom to do something(if it is important to you). Not all following the same path is what makes us different.
The school of Behaviorism makes the most sense to me. Out of the schools it is the one that takes into consideration the major role that the environment has on actions. It focuses on the influence that different environmental factors have on how and what people can learn. This makes sense to me because it is something concrete. It is not an abstract unconscious influence that is controlling actions it is a tangible factor.
ReplyDeleteDespite thinking that Behaviorism makes the most sense I think that Humanistic Psychology is the most modern school. In modern times I think that aspects like free will and determination are very important to people. Many people believe that the ability to make choices on their own is one of the most important qualities of humans. That is why I believe that Humanistic Psychology would be the most modern of the schools.

ReplyDeleteI think that Titchener's Structuralism made the most sense to me. Because it seems to me that people do always break down objects into different elements to discribe them. People usually always describe things with individual details on what they remember from a past experience. As it says in the book "they might first report on the colors they saw, then the smells, and so on."
I do agree that the most "modern" school is Humanistic Psychology. As Keith said, the ability for people to make choices on their own is important. Like right now a lot of seniors have to choose whether or not they want to go to college and if so, where. Therefore humanistic psychology is the most "modern" because everyone makes their own choices and decides what they want to do with their own life.
I would have to agree with Humanistic Psychology, because this has to do with our motivation as humans. In our lives we learn from our mistakes and do things differently when we feel we should. I believe that this theory is the most modern, because our generation has a lot of motivation and drive to grow into better people. We all mature through our mistakes and always leave room for growth. I agree with Abraham Maslow and his theory about motivation. I feel that Humanistic Psychology best suits our generation.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Humanistic Psychology is the easiest school to understand, and I consider it to be the most "modern". This is because I believe we can only learn from our mistakes by making sure we never do them again. I also think that to succeed in life, any human needs self-determination and free will. I agree with Maslow and how motivation can emphasize psychological growth, because when motivated you can do almost anything. I believe that Humanistic Psychology makes the most sense for the people in todays society.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading the text, I feel that Humanistic Psychology makes the most sense and would be considered the most modern today. According to the book the definition of humanistic psychology is the “school of psychology and theoretical viewpoint that emphasizes each person’s unique potential for psychological growth and self-direction”. This school makes the most sense to me because I believe that as human beings, we need to have motivation and self-direction. I also agree with the school’s theory that you learn from your mistakes. I feel strongly about Carl Rogers’s emphasis on self-determination, free will and the importance of choice in human behavior. Lastly, I also agree with Abraham Maslow’s theory of motivation which emphasizes psychological growth. I think it is very important for a human to have self-determination. You need to have determination if you want to get something accomplished that means a lot to you. By each of us having different goals it allows us to live very different lives. I believe that this theory is the most modern, because in our lifetime there is a larger drive for motivation with in people. As we mature we learn from out mistakes and grow both mentally and physically. Humanistic Psychology is the school that I would consider most modern today.
I believe the school of behaviorism makes the most sense. Behaviorism emphasizes the study of observable behaviors. You can learn a lot about people from watching them and seeing how they go about their daily life and how they deal with any problems they may come across. A person's actions can show what kind of personality they possess. Behaviorism also takes into consideration how the environment a person resides in can affect how they behave. Observing a person can make it evident that they need some kind of help if they are struggling. I think behaviorism makes more sense than some of the other schools because it isn't based on unconscious factors, but rather things that can be seen firsthand.
ReplyDeleteWikipedia defines modernism as “a trend of thought that affirms the power of human beings to create, improve, and reshape their environment, with the aid of practical experimentation, scientific knowledge or technology.” Behaviorism exemplifies this idea because it is preoccupied with quantification and control.
ReplyDeleteBehaviorists do not muck around with nebulous concepts like “consciousness” or “free will”. Instead, they focus on the most easily observed byproduct of our mental processes – behavior. This belief in the power of quantification is very modern. Behaviorists dispose of qualitative ambiguity altogether by neglecting the big questions. (Any account of consciousness or will cannot be very precise.)
Behaviorism is also focused on control: Pavlov conditioned his dogs, Watson boasted that he could manipulate life histories and Skinner “systematically used reinforcement or punishment to shape the behavior of rats and pigeons.” Thus we have the other half of modernity – a commitment to reshaping the environment.
Personally, I prefer William James’ Functionalism. It’s a forerunner to current-day evolutionary psychology, which focuses on the human brain in a Darwinian context. I believe this approach is the best way of understanding human nature because it is most grounded in empirical reality. Today, the evo-psych community is a hotbed of hypothesizing – James was on the right track.
I can't quite decide. I feel they are all very important in understanding ourselves and others. I suppose the most "modern" area of psychological studies is Behavior. People are intrigued and curious about the way we act and why we act that way. We want to know about emotions and how to manipulate others. There are also many experiements that can be done with behovior as shown by Watson and Skinner.
ReplyDeletei would have to say the Humanistic approach is the most modern. It describes the growth potential and self-direction. i strongly believe as humans we learn from our mistakes because if something effects us greatly then it will determine weather we do it agin or not. IN todays society in my generation we grew up being told that lazy people just dont make it in this world you need to be successful to make it anywhere and that gives us the motivation we need because nobody wants to be a bum as we have been told our whole lives. some believe that god already has plans for us on what we doin in life i beleive that we have the oppertunity to change that through free will and self direction

ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose on which school of psychology to be the most modern, I would have to choose behaviorism. I would have to go with this choice because how we are tend to decifer our acrtions and behavior, and by studying the way people act can tell us alot. By observing human behaviors we can see how humans learn and with that we can see what to do manipulate human behavior.

ReplyDeletei think behavioralism psycology is the most modern school because people usually learn from there mistakes and they dont want to end up making the same mistake again. People want to learn how people act and why they act that way. The way we act toward something we do determines if we really want to do it again or not. Our behaviors determine how we react to different things. If you can manipulate people you can get them to do anything, therfore affecting their behaviors.

ReplyDeleteOut of all of the early schools of psychology, I think humanistic psychology is the most modern. Rather than just analyzing humans' outward actions like the school of behaviorism, humanism considers our inner-workings and uniquely human qualities. This approach makes the most sense to me because there are many things that affect humans which may not be outwardly expressed through our behavior. By examining what is not obvious, this type of psychology reveals more about humans' mental processes and the true "human experience."

ReplyDeleteI would have to say that the school of humanistic psychology not only makes the most sense to me but seems the most "modern". This school of thought does not limit itself to behavior or thought but rather utilizes both of them to develop a better understanding of the human psyche. I particularly like that Rogers emphasizes free will because just as you said in class Mr. Yip, we all like to believe we control our own lives. Behaviorism and Psychoanalysis seemed a little too limited for me although Freud obviously made some good points as his theories are still in use today. Structuralism and Functionalism are simply outdated. Therefore the humanistic psychology school of thought clearly appears to be the most modern.
Out of all of the schools, the one that appealed to me most was Humanistic Psychology. This school explains how people behave based on their experiences. I like this idea the best because it is how I feel about my own personal behaviors. Different people experience very different things throughout their lifetime, which has a huge impact on how they think and behave. For example, if someone had a traumatic experience with a dog, they are likely to be afraid of them when they get older. Also personally, I have learned a lot from my mistakes. Even after my parents have warned me about bad things that would happen, I truly only learned after I had experienced it myself. Overall Humanistic Psychology seems to be the easiest for every one to relate to, and judging by the posts above most people like this one the best.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Humanistic Psychology makes the most sense to me and is the most modern. To succeed in life we need to make mistakes and we need to learn from our mistakes. People are not that stupid to make a mistake and make the same one over again.

I believe that Behavioralism makes the most sense and is the most modern, although Humanistic Psychology is applicable as well. As far as I understand it, a form of behavioralism is still used today. Scientists often observe people and animals in their natural environment to note their actions and behaviors. These behaviors could be measured and proven test after test. Humanistic psychology also studies the concious, which we use in modern science. Maslow and Rogers believed that behavior was molded by environment.
ReplyDeleteThe school of psychology that makes the most sense to me is the idea of functionalism. Wiliam James was basically the founder of functionalism. And functionalism is stressing the importance of how behavior functions to allow people and animals to adapt to their environments. Functionalism also makes sense in that it really focuses on looking at people in their natural environment.
ReplyDeleteI believe that humanistic psychology is the most logical of the several psychology schools. Humanistic psychology stresses the conscious experiences of the patients- some thing can be observed, recorded, felt, remembered. This is greatly different than those that focus on the unconscious, something that si elusive, never definite, and always open to interpretation. The conscious is something that can be experienced, and I believe this is important when studying psychology. Humanistic psychology stresses that self-determination, free will, and the importance of choice are key in human behavior.
ReplyDeleteI believe that all people have the capability of leading their life any way they want to. The freedom of choice allows a bright kid to become a drug dealer, or someone with a not-so-great living situation to grow up and be a CEO of a large company some day. Behaviorists believed that human behavior was shaped and maintained by environmental causes. If this is true, then should children born into poor families stay poor forever? Should children born into a rich, successful family automatically be money savvy and know how to handle business? I believe that the humanistic psychology is the most accurate because people have a choice. People have self-determination, free will, and can do whatever they feel is right. The humanistic approach is a much more modern take on psychology.
The humanistic school makes the most sense to me personally. Everyone learns from experience, and what you experience shapes who you are. This is very apparent with people who have traveled the world or seen different cultures, they almost always tend to be very open-minded people. If you experience something traumatic, thats going to have a huge affect on your life, like soldiers who ahve experienced war for example. Many schools of psychology do not factor in significant experiences towards affecting ones personality, and I feel experiences are the largest factor contributing to ones personality.

ReplyDeleteI believe that the most modern school would be a fusion between behaviorism and humanistic. My reasoning is that there is alot of deception in the world today and people are interested in the "Why" this backs up behaviorism because all the things that people do have a reason. It also backs up humanistics because everything that sombody experiences effects them in some way and helps to shape personality, and therefor effects the decisions they make which would be the "Why"
